AMBER GARRISON (’11) came to UMFK after a successful career in both vol- leyball and basketball at Las Plumas High in Oroville, California. She immediately faced two very different challenges as a freshman. On the volleyball court she was joining a team that hadn’t won a match
the previous year, and on the basketball court she replaced Dana Lemon (HOF’10), a stellar point guard who had led the school to its first two conference championships. Amber was up to the challenge.
She earned volleyball All-Conference honors and was the Sunrise Conference Rookie of the Year as a freshman. Amber continued to improve as a player, and the team’s success improved each season along with her, culminating with the University’s first Sunrise Conference Championship during her senior season in 2010. Amber finished her UMFK volleyball career with four All-Conference selections, one Sunrise Conference Championship, and two Conference Runner-Up finishes. She set team records in assists (1,190) and digs (417).
As a four-year starter at point guard for the Lady Bengals basketball team, Amber continued in the tradition of out- standing point guard play. She would lead her teams to three Sunrise Conference Championships and was named to the All- Conference team twice. She set University records in assists (430), steals (326), wins (71), and conference championships (3). Fittingly, Amber earned the honor of the coveted UMFK Female Athlete of the Year Award in 2010.
Amber received a Bachelor of Science degree in Behavioral Science, with honors.

JAMES HARVEY HONORED AS THE FIRST FLOYD “RED” POWELL AWARD RECIPIENT
UMFK’s Athletic Hall of Fame Committee proudly named James Harvey from Fort Kent, Maine as the inaugural recipient of the Floyd “Red” Powell Award. Harvey received his award at the seventh annual Athletic Hall of Fame Induction dinner and ceremony on March 22.
Harvey is a long-time supporter of, and contributor to, UMFK Athletics. He has worked the game-clock and as the score- keeper at all UMFK home games, and has served the men’s basketball team as honorary team manager and assistant coach for the past 20 years.
The Floyd “Red” Powell Award is a newly-created award that will be presented annually by the UMFK Athletic Hall of Fame Committee to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the development and/or enhancement of UMFK Athletics and its student-athletes for an extended period of time.
The award is named for Floyd Powell, academic dean, director of athletics, and coach at the Madawaska Training School. Powell served as athletic director at the University for 21 years, and coached basketball and baseball. His basketball team captured the University’s first state championship during the 1935-36 season.
