Turning Hope into Achievement
Because of the University’s individual support through staff and faculty, an active extracurricular program, and a strong academic program, Dr. Jules Bodo (‘07) tells people to this day, “UMFK couldn’t have been a bet- ter choice for me, a place that gave me hope.”
In the fall of 2003, Jules enrolled in the biology program at UMFK. Bodo was originally from Yaounde, Cameroon. Like many foreign and domestic students before him, Jules came to UMFK with hope and deter- mination, and it became the place that would give him the foundation for his success. Jules said UMFK opened many doors for him, whether it was opportunities in sports, academics or professional successes.
In sports, Jules played on the UMFK Bengal men’s soccer team for four years in a variety of positions. His skills on the field played an important role in the Sunrise Conference Championships in 2004 and 2006; National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Region X Championships in 2006; and Potato Barrel Champions from 2003-2006. The NAIA named him to the All-Conference Team in 2005.
While a student at UMFK, he gained professional work experience as an employee for Aramark, as a computer teacher assistant, a tutor, and was a member of the UMFK Student Senate. At the UMFK Awards Convocation, Jules received the Haenssler Fellowship Award and gained the honor as UMFK’s Alumni Association Outstanding Senior in 2007. Jules graduated that May, with a Bachelor of Science in Biology.
With his experience and training at UMFK boosting his chances at success, Bodo earned a Ph.D. at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine in 2014. Jules currently works at Catholic Health System. His wife, Sonya Charette, and their children, reside in Williamsville, New York.
Dr. Jules Bodo is an example of why many foreign students join their peers in the United States and choose the University of Maine at Fort Kent to be their alma mater.
Going Above and Beyond
Since graduating from the UMFK Bachelor of Science Nursing Program in 2012, Ashley (Boucher) Law has been working on the medical floor at Trinity Hospital in Minot, North Dakota. Law serves as a night shift nurse and has been a charge nurse since that summer. She is instrumental in training new staff, providing continued education to staff as they encounter new experiences in their nursing careers, and taking part on the Code Blue team. This past year, Ashley received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The award honors Ashley for all she does, who she is, and the incredible and meaningful difference she makes in the lives of so many people. A rep- resentative of the DAISY Foundation recognized her at a cere- mony where she received an official certificate, a DAISY Award pin and a hand-carved stone sculpture entitled “A Healer’s Touch.” Ashley loves spending her spare time with her family.
