April 2010 Meeting Minutes
April 26, 2010 (Deb)
- Sofia will be the next to take meeting minutes.
- Brenda’s last day for this semester is May 14th.
- Sofia is waiting to hear from Bruno and Doris regarding any extra hours their students might need. The first three week session has very few on campus classes. Most are online. Based on current information we may not offer extended hours. (as of 4/27 - the library will not be open evenings or weekends. Summer hours are Mon – Fri, 8 - 4:30.)
- Katie reported on Orono’s successful use of a flipchart in the library as a means of getting student comments, feedback. Sofia mentioned although it is late into the semester, perhaps using this as a tool for student feedback regarding library renovations. Les said the library design is still wide open but agreed it wouldn’t hurt to put up a flip chart and see what happens. Sofia will contact Don Ouellette for the chart.
- Weeding process – Even with the serious weeding currently underway in the stacks, it will not be possible to narrow down the collection to fit only in the upstairs ranges as previously hoped. Sofia reported the tentative plans include the first half of the downstairs (as entering the space from the gallery) open with seating arrangements leaving the back half of the floor space for the ranges. Ranges will include juvenile, young adult and curriculum collection as well as A – L (hopefully) downstairs and the remainder upstairs. Details of how this will work out are still in the works. Les is open to all suggestions.
- Les should hear soon if asbestos removal and other necessary library upgrades will occur this summer. While it would be desirable to coordinate the activities, it is still unknown what actions the university is planning on implementing at this time.
- Les reported Symposia presentations will be available on line.
- Sofia is removing the little "do no shut down" paper tabs from the reference computers. She is asking that we keep an eye out to see if the computers get shut down. If so, she will replace them.
- This summer circ will be sending out bills to students and patrons of other libraries with outstanding books in the hopes of retrieving some of the items.
- Les reported the library consortium submitted a $300,000 SIF proposal which if approved would provide library users with a new "discovery service."
- With concerns about books getting wet, the Freedom Express driver informed circ he was told to take books in the zippered bags only. Les has not received verification of this. At this time, circ has not been using padded envelopes unless placing them into a zippered bag. Small boxes are acceptable if they are within a tote. No large [cardboard] boxes out of the tote will be accepted as they are subject to moisture penetration.
