March 2010 Meeting Minutes
March 8, 2010 (Asita)
- Deb will be the next to take meeting minutes
- Microfilm/Library Space
- Has been discarded, and cabinets are emptied and ready to move out of the microfilm room. The Serials Room has been reorganized.
- One option is to move microfilm and machines to the Serials Room or the newspapers from Special Collection to the Serials Room, or a combination of the two.
- The long-term goal for the microfilm room was to have a food room for students.
- Sofia mentioned one concern is if the microfilm and machines were in the Serials Room people would have access to the magazine back issues.
- The other option of moving newspapers into the Serials Room, we need to ask
Brad Ritz if we still need to keep a full year of Wall Street Journal.
- We also need to make sure newspapers in Special Collections are all we want to keep so we know how much space we’d need to move them to the Serials Room.
- Only keep the current new machine that works with microfiche and microfilm reels, remove/get rid of the older machines, and Sofia mentioned we could give the machine that handles fiche to the Archives.
- Leslie asked if there was room to put the New York Times microfilm in the Serials Room with newspapers on top. The long term goal is to open up the library space out back.
- Leslie also mentioned the possibility of having the small computer lab used for the microfilm machine and/or assisted learning station.
- Think about what’s being used in the building and what’s not. We want to make the library space welcoming to users.
- If we open space downstairs, we should remove big tables upstairs to discourage loud group work.
- Sofia mentioned closing the two open spaces upstairs with plexiglass to close the area and limit noise, but allow light. Katie mentioned vertical sheets of plexiglass along the railings.
- Deb mentioned the possibility of putting study tables in the microfilm room.
- Leslie mentioned the Powell Building Opening on Wednesday, with a ribbon cutting and tours.
- In summary, look at what we can get rid of, measure the microfilm machines to figure out if they will fit in the Serials Room, do we need to keep the Wall Street Journal back holdings, think creatively about the library space, more weeding so we can move more books upstairs to open the downstairs.
- Sofia brought up Creedo (online reference e-resource collection), the cost will be divied by FTE amongst interested libraries.
- Sofia brought up an item from the Reavis collection that because of how it’s cataloged, couldn’t be found in URSUS without knowing the title.
- Leslie mentioned a paper the library got from WorldCat, Value of the OCLC. We don’t contribute to WorldCat unless the system does a project, we use Z39.50.
- Leslie also described an incident that occurred on Sunday night, a student
in the library felt uncomfortable and afraid of another person in the library,
the issue was complicated by the library work-study and student being friends
and talking over Skype. Leslie will investigate the issue.
- Briefly discussed the courier change-over, right now there are 2 couriers delivering to specific libraries, which will eventually change to just one courier.
