November 2009 Meeting Minutes

November 3, 2009 (Katie)

ConnectEd (Leslie): Leslie wants the library staff to understand how ConnectEd, the campus emergency notification system, works (how to send messages, how to troubleshoot for the emergency team) since the library is the command center during most emergencies. Since the library is the center, we need to give them the same support we would other patrons; the team will not be as familiar with the library facilities as we are. Library staff will need to open the server room for the team. The staff should review how to add a printer as well as look at the ConnectEd site.

One-Stop (Leslie): Financials and business office are a big part of the one-stop service idea. As they close at 5, the library may serve as a help desk for students for these non-library services until 9 p.m. This includes (in MainStreet) reading billing screens, how to pay online, etc. The library staff will need more software training. - In offering end-user support, the library staff should be comfortable with: Sharepoint; Google docs; Blackboard; the assisted learning station. Sofia will make a list and set up times for training sessions on these.

Journals Out Back (Brenda and Katie): Now that the print serials have been weeded, Brenda will begin moving titles downstairs. We need to allow for growth, or we will run into the same problem. If the microfilm readers are moved into the back room, it would provide public access to journals shelved upstairs. We need to think creatively regarding our space issues. Also, there are a large number of cardboard and green plastic magazine holders: these should go into the freebies or can be offered to the local schools.

Microfilm (Katie): First round of weeding is complete; we need to go through the remaining titles again. Serials (Leslie): One more sweep through the titles to ensure all academic titles are not available online through the databases.

Tales Online (Sofia): Thinking about cancelling the database. It has been unreliable and visually cumbersome. Is there a better resource? Perhaps the library could collect the collections that are available through the database, rather than retaining the database itself.

Faculty Assignments (Sofia): Sofia has a folder of faculty assignments in her desk for library staff who assist students working on particular assignments.

Holidays (Sofia): Veterans' Day: no classified staff working. Thanksgiving: Sofia will be here. Extended evening hours are coming up.

Powell (Leslie): This week Powell was signed back to the university. The faculty should be moving into the building over Christmas break. Polycom will move back to Powell. Library staff would like a tour/map of the new building to familiarize and facilitate giving any assistance and directions in Powell.
