Microfilm Machines: tried HSLIC and MELIBS, what about company taking them back? That would probably involve paying to do so. Give them back to Leslie.
In Library Events: Deb mentioned she had heard feedback from people wanting for library events like the author reading that was done. Possibility of presentations for writing classes, such as the poetry creative writing class to give readings. We will be closed Friday nights, unless an event is taking place. Sofia wants us to be sure that when the library is open after hours for events to have a staff person there to monitor.
Stolen Books: Found removed security tags/card holders from 3 different books placed in another book. Asita checked for the books in the stacks, and none of them are there. 2 of the books were missing since 2009, while the third said available. Leslie raised the issue of how do you create a campus culture of integrity and honesty, so there is no tolerance for that type of behavior (email to students, more electronic resources). A related issue was raised when Brenda mentioned twice last winter her wipers on her vehicle were changed with other ones. Sofia said we need to make sure and report anything that happens. Sofia was interested in finding out what the current on search numbers were.
Orientation: This Friday, Sofia has contacted Ray and is hoping to hear from him (or he could contact Nicki or Anne) so the library knows what is expected of us. Sofia also mentioned that she is changing her BI Sessions a bit, by giving students a tour of the library. Leslie mentioned emphasizing no fines, encouraging checking out materials, and giving the library suggestions for purchasing. Also talked about stolen books and how a lot of missing books were discovered when the inventory was done.
Computer accounts: Sofia wanted to know where IT is at with this. Leslie reported that IT is behind, but they will be doing a load of student names into the system so everyone should be all set (the login will be the same as their university email, and birthdate information will be included). Sofia explained that the first step should be to verify the student has an account, if so then just tell them the default password. If they don’t have an account, we should proceed with the steps of having them fill out a form, and creating the account as usual. Sofia also mentioned that if a student can’t log on, and you’ve watched them log on and you’ve tried too, it might be that their log in name is too long. Leslie also noted that Nicki will be sending an email to students with information about their computer account and the H drive. Also, when computers are turned on, there will be a user agreement that will show up every time a student logs on. Katie mentioned that she was curious to know how much usage wireless printing has.
Campus Development Day: This Wednesday, issues with having a work-study in the afternoon. Leslie said if everyone wants to go just close the library.
Work-study Positions Clarification: Sofia gave Leslie a printout of various changes/clarifications for work-study positions.
Reopening Parking Lot Entrance Doors: They are finishing up the stairs. The current doors don’t close, new doors are needed. Lights outside need to be checked, push bar needs to be taken down. Mat needed for inside entrance, signage for area. Will try keeping doors open until 9pm. Remember to un-alarm and alarm door as necessary. Katie also mentioned the bell tower light, to clarify that we turn it on around 5pm once it gets dark earlier outside, and a night work-study turns it off when they close. On Sunday we should remind work-study to turn the bell tower light on around 5pm and off when they close.
Fire Maps: Leslie mentioned that she was reminded of this in VPAS, she needs to follow up on it.
Wireless Internet Registration: Make sure students use tempest, it is a one-time registration, whereas using the UMS guest you have to sign in each time.
Hours for Asita: Asita will be working 7:30am to 4pm (half-hour lunch), except days when she will be working her Monday nights, which will be the regular noon to 9pm (hour lunch).
New People on Campus: there are several new people on campus. Kate Fecinta has left. Cheryl Roberts has replaced Diana White. Kathleen is the new AA for the Humanities department. Sally is the new secretary for the Registrar’s office. We should hopefully hear soon about the Registrar’s position. Ellia has replaced Bruce Smith (enrollment management). Sofia will forward emails with office changes to the rest of the library staff. It has not been officially decided that student will be living in Powell. Some students may continue to stay there, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Katie wanted to know about the dress code that was mentioned in the VPAS meeting minutes. Leslie clarified that it was more about a professional attitude. It was mentioned that some staff get very comfortable around students, and should remember where you are and who’s around, to present yourself in a professional manner. Also mentioned addressing faculty by their title, as well as the importance of civility (especially in controversial discussions). As far as nametags go, we don’t have to wear them all the time, but we should wear them during registration, orientation, admissions tours, etc. so that students and/or parents know we are staff and can help them.
Handicapped student: Discussed changes in the library so that we are as accessible as we can be for the student. Walkways just have parts by the library, old model school, and gym to finish up repaving.
Other issues: Athletics has asked for a small lab, Leslie will let us know if this happens (so we know to tell students). There is a new smartboard in OMS 103. The new iBooks will probably be ready in 2 weeks or so. Symposium: More people on the committee to make the process smoother. Instead of having student sign-up online, the information will be given in the classroom. We should learn how to use the printer in the GIS lab so we can help students if needed.
Podiums: all the podiums have been changed; the computers are all new with Windows 7. Nicki is sending an email to faculty to let them know.
Sundays: All Sundays to be worked should be in the calendar so we know who’s working which Sunday. The library is closed labor day, so Sundays will start on September 11. If staff want to bake something for the first day of classes (August 29), they are welcome to do so. Sofia will buy cookies to put on tables in the library.
