April 2013 Meeting Minutes

April 22, 2013 (Deb)

Flip charts results: Three flip charts asking for student input regarding the library were distributed around the library for two weeks. There were only a few comments - two positive remarks on cleanliness; two suggesting different hours on Saturday and Sunday; one asking for better toilet paper and one for better working water fountains. Sofia will conduct a poll to see what range of hours students want. The polling mechanism may have limitations on the choices available but she will work carefully on the designing of the wording. Les suggested we look at the data so we can make a decision for the fall. Les would like to do a walk around with phys plant to address the physical needs of the library and will relay the positive comments regarding cleanliness.

Computer lab: We are to think about and look at the ways the space is used. Would it be better to move some of the computers into other areas in the library and open up the space in the lab? Bring any suggestions to Sofia. Summer is the time to have any changes implemented.

Microsoft upgrade: Les said campus computers will be getting a Microsoft upgrade which will occur in batches. First batch is academics, including the labs. The rest of the campus will follow the next year. Sofia’s computer will probably be upgraded with the first batch which allows us to acquaint ourselves with new functions to be able to assist students. This will hopefully happen before fall classes begin. Helpful hint: google a question when not finding what you need. It’s better than the help feature.

Weeding: Weeding continues. Sofia will work on what she can in the H’s. A shift in faculty may put some areas on hold for the time being. She will definitely tackle the M-N’s. Les is ready to send a list of S-T’s to Asita and the next phase of weeding can proceed on this section.

Equipment: Aaron has photographed the old equipment currently being stored in the server room. He will try to sell it on eBay. If no takers, Sofia will see if MSSM would be interested in it for parts. The extra library shelving needs to be removed from the basement and Aaron will try this on eBay too.

Focus on Faculty: Next event is May 7th at 3pm. Steve Selva is the faculty presenter. Geraldine Becker expressed an interest in being a presenter. Spring attendance will have an impact on fall considerations for the event.

Scilab videos: With Steve retiring at the end of the semester, Les will check to make sure the library’s VHS collection currently kept in the science lab, is returned to the library.

Campus updates: Les said a reorganization of the campus departments is currently in discussion. She will let us know when decisions have been made. Some faculty are citing work to rule as system faculty are currently without a contract. This appears to be random and situation dependent. IT now reports to Dick Thompson. Organizational structure is supposed to change but Les has not seen anything yet. Table Top emergency training: library staff session is scheduled for May 22. It is an opportunity for us as a group to talk about how we would react to different scenarios and get feedback on what might be more appropriate, what works better, etc.
