April 2015 Meeting Minutes

April 28, 2015 (Katie)

Procurement (Leslie): The Procurement Office initially projected a $40,000 savings from the University System libraries; this was incorrectly based on the bookstores, not libraries. The Library Directors were asked to look at three areas for Procurement: BPress, a book scanner for USM, and library acquisitions. The Libraries will offer Films on Demand to Procurement as a negotiation. Library staff should be aware there will be changes relating to Procurement going forward.

Laptops (Leslie): Deb sent an email to staff with the updated laptop procedures. Leslie would like laptop circulation to return to the way it was: kept in a locked case with staff-only access. IT will be switching out the Toshibas. Deb needs to determine how many iBook chargers (and sleeves if necessary) we need to purchase for replacement. Staff must use the laptop check-in/checkout sheet.

Positions (Leslie): Katie is leaving. Leslie has requested a Library Assistant II position at 40 hours and a Head of Technical Services position; the library will lose 20 hours (Library Assistant I position). The plan of action would be that Asita would move to the Head of Tech. Services position, and Brenda would move to Assistant II. These positions will hopefully be in place 7/6/2015. They were presented to Executive, but not everyone was there; John Murphy is presenting them to President Hess. These positions are seen as promotion from within, rather than new positions. Prior to 7/6, Katie will transfer her duties and procedures to Leslie (as of May 15). The Tech Services work-study will report to Leslie.

Floating collection: Library Directors (Leslie): USM is piloting the floating collection. URSUS has $4,000 to invest in the floating collection. Staff should start thinking about how we want to participate.

Noise/Library Atmosphere (Leslie): The signs in the quiet and silent zones are working. The "Noisy Section" is now called the "Talking Zone." The Talking Zone needs to be a welcoming atmosphere to everyone so that students feel comfortable in the space. Something is happening on nights and weekends that make the space unwelcoming for some. Additional signage will be added.

UMPI (Leslie): UMPI currently does not have library staff for the summer.

Summer Hours: Waiting to hear if students need additional hours for HESI study. Library may add hours during: Summer Bridge; on-campus Marshall Islands students; Accelerated Nursing students (August?). Sofia will check with Erin Soucy.

Bond Project: Nadeau (Leslie): Nadeau 109 and 107 are both coming down the week after graduation. The nursing computer lab will no longer exist. Any specialized nursing software will come to the library.

Memorial Day (Sofia): The library will be closed.
