April 2015 Meeting Minutes
May 21, 2015 (Asita)
Staff Meeting 5/21/15 (Asita)
- Discarding paper Census materials (Sofia): Sofia has contacted the census about discarding older materials from the 80’s and 90’s. They would like us to compile a list to offer to other libraries. Possibility of Aroostook County specific materials going into Special Collections was discussed. Leslie noted that they may not fit the collection guidelines.
- Project Sails Information Literacy free testing (Sofia): start Fall 2015, Sofia wants to talk to faculty about this, and Leslie will look into this as well.
- Shared collection (Leslie): MSCC, shared collection. Leslie will email Asita to start the process of having our collection analyzed to see what their recommendations would be with regards on what to keep (not what to discard). About 3-4 weeks to do analysis, Leslie suggests doing this first before starting the weeding of the H and Q sections.
- Christina reports to Asita starting Monday, May 25. Brenda will as well starting July 26.
- Sofia will cover Serials Solutions and electronic serials/resources matters until Brenda is back.
- Katie’s phone is set up so that you can call out with it, but people cannot call in to it. Computer will be left there for now to see how it’s being used (or if). Brenda and Asita’s computers are slated to be updated this summer.
- When Brenda returns staff will look at library office space to see if areas need to be rearranged.
- Leslie will be handling the microfilm vendor/purchasing (taking this over from Katie).
- Possibility for the Archives to get a 20 hour position (AA III).
- IT changes in who Art will be reporting to, now it is Cindy Mitchell. USM and UM (Orono) have cut IT Directors positions.
- Interim President at UMA filling USM President position.
- UMFK’s interim President should be announced 1st week of June or mid-June.
- Asita will contact Linda Deprey regarding cap and gown left in library office by unknown individual. Sofia wants it out of there by fall (update: Linda does not know anything about it. Sofia will contact Katie).
- (Leslie) NEASC meeting went well, despite some issues with the Northern Door Inn. Leslie would like Sofia’s help with the document room (virtual).
- Streaming NCLEX-RN Review planned for Fall 2015, for both on campus and distance students.
- Junior Library Guild - to keep in mind when we consider re-adding, we can add as many or as few levels as we want.
- Rearranging quiet zone/computer lab (Sofia)
- Want space to be quiet, having tables, and especially tables by entrances not conducive to quiet space.
- Leslie noted that when a staff person is not here, at nights and weekends is when it falls apart the most; how to get people to respect the rules when staff are not there?
- Sofia would like to take one of the viewing rooms offline, Leslie said a wall-mounted unit would be nice.
- Sofia talked about the proposed project space where the computer lab is. People would need to reserve the space for group work, but if the space is not reserved anyone is welcome to use it.
- Leslie asked Deb about space for DVDs, are we running out of room? Need to weed the DVD collection? Or order a new cabinet?
- Laptop cart - will work better with smaller laptops, then all will fit in the cart. Will be lending out PCs (but not Macs) to cohorts. Deb will let Leslie know if any chargers or sleeves are needed for the laptops.
- 3 different cohorts (education, business and nursing). Looks like one (business) may not come; the other ones should be here first week of June.
- Leslie brought up the fun online magazines BPL has for their patrons. Sofia will look into this.
- Sofia walked staff around the library and talked about suggestions for library space. Idea is to change the space, make group space, and have a project room (taking 6 pc’s out of lab).
- Project room / Maker space ideas discussed, 3-D printer.
- Put low range to spread out JUV/YA Collections, could be used to display items as well. Sofia would like to look at replacing older JUV/YA books that have a lot of use.
- Leslie mentioned an issue with community and adjunct people dominating/using space, not keeping in mind this is a shared space (space for students first).
- Discussed moving microfilm cabinets and other furniture.
- Leslie would like to replace some furniture in the library, will send email to Sofia regarding UMF’s updated furniture.
- Overall, we need to think about what kinds of students we have and their needs, more space for group/talking areas, or quiet areas? Make sure we are meeting the student needs, and adjust the library space accordingly.
- Look at possibly weeding the VHS, Music CDs and Audiobooks on cassette; Sofia and Asita will run lists and start the process.
