John Murphy (’75 & ’81)
John Murphy attended UMFK from 1972 to 1975, earning an associate’s degree. He is a former UMFK student-athlete that played for the Bengal’s soccer team for three years. He went on to earn a bachelor of university studies degree in 1981 from UMFK. In 2006, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) honored him as the Athletic Director of the Year for the Sunrise Athletic Conference.
Currently, John serves as UMFK’s Vice President of Administration with oversight of most of the day to day campus operation. In this position he also is responsible for all fis- cal and accounting records for the campus; oversight of formulating campus budget and budget policies; and ensure campus compliance with system-wide fiscal and accounting procedures. During the twenty plus years he has been with UMFK he has also served as dean of students, dean of enrollment management, director of financial aid, and athletic director.
John is a member of the President’s Executive Staff, President’s Cabinet, Vice President Administrative Services Council, Strategic Planning Committee, and the University’s Emergency Management Committee. He is currently serving his fourth term as a board member of the Maine Educational Loan Authority, a position that he was first appointed to by Governor King and then again by Governor LePage, with confirmation by the Maine state legislature. He has served on several other local boards, including Visiting Nurses of Aroostook, Fort Kent Real Estate Development Corporation Board of Directors, and was elected twice to the Fort Kent Town Council.
Darryl Peary (’67)
Darryl Peary played for Coach Lowell “Ozzie” Osgood (HOF ’08) as a four-year start- er in basketball and soccer. He was the first Bengal team goalkeeper in the soccer pro- gram’s history. A 1967 graduate of the (then) Fort Kent State Teachers College (FKSTC), he was a 1,000 point scorer in basketball; was named most valuable player; was Male Athlete of the Year in 1965; and won two Northeast College Soccer Championships. Darryl graduated from the FKSTC earning a Bachelor of Science in elementary educa- tion and went on to earn a bachelor of science degree in physical education and recre- ation from Aroostook State Teachers College in Presque Isle, Maine.
After graduation, Darryl taught at Forest Hills High School in Jackman, Maine; Bangor Christian High School in Bangor, Maine; and Calvary Christian School in Derry, New Hampshire. Peary also had a distinguished career as a longtime high school ath- letic director and coach for soccer, baseball, basketball, and track. When Darryl was at Calvary, he was honored by the naming of “Peary Field” for his 22 years of coaching. Darryl retired from teaching in 2009 after 43 years.
After retirement, Daryl and his wife, Melvina settled in Corinth, Maine and Zephyrhills, Florida. When Darryl is in Maine, he coaches at Bangor Christian and enjoys the fellowship at their church. In Florida, he continues to watch the Maine high school basketball tournaments online.
“Red” Powell Award Presented to Dr. R. Paul Johnson
UMFK’s Athletic Hall of Fame Committee named Dr. R. Paul Johnson, from Fort Kent, as the recipient of the Floyd “Red” Powell Award at the UMFK 8th annual Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony which took place on March 21.
Dr. Johnson is a long-time supporter and contributor to the university and athletics. He was a surgeon for Northern
Maine Medical Center, where he worked for 37 years and retired in 1995. He has shown much compassion to his patients and, in times when athletic trainers did not exist, he was always the “doctor on call” during home games. Dr. Johnson was an advocate for the financial support to create the nursing program at UMFK.
In 1991, he received the Distinguished
Service Award from UMFK and was named Fort Kent’s Citizen of the Year. He served from 1990 to 2004 on the UMFK Foundation at various capacities. From 2006 to 2009, Dr. Johnson was a member of the UMFK Board of Visitors. He served as president of the St. John Valley Senior Golfers. Dr. Johnson continues to support students at UMFK through the Dr. Richard
