what constitutes a dynasty often is a matter of opinion or debate. However, teams that have won multiple championships, on any level of competitiveplay, consecutivelyorduringalimited span of years, are most commonly referred to as a dynasty.
This past November, the UMFK women’s soccer team won the 2013 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Soccer National Championship in a 3 to 2 overtime thriller against Daemen College (Amherst, New York) at the USCAA tourney, held in Charleston, West Virginia. It was the Lady Bengals’ third national championship in the past four years, and it avenged an overtime loss to the same Daemen Wildcats team in the 2012 title match.
UMFK finished the season with an impres- sive 17-1-1 record, topped off by the national title.
In the title game, junior forward, Ariane Laberge-Pelletier (Montreal, Quebec, Canada), scored the game winner for UMFK five minutes into overtime as she drilled a shot past an outstretched Daemen College goalkeeper. First- year defender, Brianna Mills (Deux Montagnes, Quebec, Canada), whose deflected shot was converted for the winning goal, got credit for the assist.
Sophomore forward, Katherine Ferland (Sainte-Agathe-Des-Monts, Quebec, Canada), opened UMFK’s scoring during regulation, scor- ing on an assist from Laberge-Pelletier in the 37th minute. But Daemen answered less than four minutes later with a header to knot the

Senior goalkeeper, Kimika Forbes (Trinidad & Tobago), came up strong with seven saves onnineDaemenshotsongoal. UMFKhelda 19-13 advantage in overall shots in the tightly- contested match.
With four successive appearances in the USCAA national title contest, and three cham- pionship trophies to show for it, is it too bold to refer to the UMFK Lady Bengals soccer program as a dynasty? Some followers of the team certainly don’t think so.
On many levels, at least at first, the 2013 season was an improbable run to the national crown.
